7:00pm [7:00pm] Paper Mills of Bellows Falls
Description:
Join David Deacon at the Rockingham Library for his presentation on the paper mill industries of Bellows Falls in the period of their growth, from 1865-1900. He will focus on the mills themselves, the technology of paper making and the lives of the workers. Bellows Falls had a vibrant community due to its manufacturing base, including the wood pulp paper mills. Deacon moved to Bellows Falls in 1980 and graduated from Bellows Falls Union High School in 1981. He went on to Marlboro College and then to the University of North Carolina for a Masters Degree in Folklore. His concentration in American History was at Syracuse University where he earned a Masters and Doctorate. His dissertation was on the paper industry in the Northeast, including Franklin NH, Turners Falls, MA and Bellows Falls. Today, Deacon is an Adjunct Professor of History at SUNY Oswego and at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY.
