From Doctors to Doulas: The Art and Heart of Women Healers

Description: Women have always been healers. From wise medicine women of ancient times to
the "birth ambassadors" of our own era, the caring female practitioner (and
patient advocate) is a central figure in the history of healing as well as
the history of women's place across cultures. But there is even more to the
story: Women are also change-makers in the health sector. Nurses, midwives,
doulas, feminist psychiatrists, health educators, caregivers, and others
have all played a vital role in reshaping the way health care is framed and
delivered. This talk will illuminate some of the key figures and historical
trends that continue to shape the way we view the healing arts in contrast
to what some have called "the deadly science of modern medicine."
