Celebrate Vermont’s Historic Folk Music with David Dean

Join historian, folklorist and musician David Deacon on Thursday, June 27 at 7 p.m. at the Rockingham Library as he performs a selection of regional folk songs and relates some true stories about Rockingham’s musical gifts to the world. The songs come from a collection made by Helen Hartness Flanders between the 1930s and the 1950s. “I’m especially interested in songs that tell us something about social attitudes or songs that had a social purpose. People sang when they gathered or danced,” says Deacon. He’ll be accompanying himself on fiddle and a nineteenth century guitar to demonstrate what the music sounded like once upon a time.

Deacon moved to Bellows Falls in 1980 and graduated from Bellows Falls Union High School in 1981. He went on to Marlboro College and then to the University of North Carolina for a master’s degree in Folklore. His concentration in American History was at Syracuse University where he earned a master’s and doctorate.  The Bellows Falls paper mill industry features prominently in his doctoral thesis: Paper Town, Sense of place in Industrial Small-Town New England 1869-1927. He is an Adjunct Professor of History at SUNY and at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, NY.  This event is free and open to the public.  The Library is located at 65 Westminster St., Bellows Falls, Vt and is wheelchair accessible.

The event is finished.
