What is VELI-STEM?

VELI-STEM stands for "Vermont Early Literacy Initiative - Sceince Technology Engineering Math". The RFPL is proud to be one of 26 Vermont libraries participating in this exciting project to bring science inquiry and physical science programs to our youngest community members!

Why STEM for young children?

    * Builds on children’s curiosity and interest
    * Provides opportunities for children to engage in cognitively challenging and motivating learning experiences
    * Builds a foundation for the development of important science concepts
    * Provides opportunities for the development of important language, social, and physical skills

RFPL STEM Programs

Children and families can expect to see more STEM concepts integrated into existing library programs, like storytime and Family Fun Nights.

This summer children of all ages are invited to STEAM Saturdays.

Get hands-on with Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math every Saturday during the summer reading program from 11am-12pm. This program is open to all ages, but kids age 12 and younger must have an adult attend the program with them. Materials are limited for some workshops; pre-registration is recommended.

June 25: Rockets!
Create rockets that really fly using simple ingredients and everyday materials. This program will be outside. If there is bad weather, the program will be rescheduled.

July 9: Learn to Solder
Be on time for this program to attend a brief soldering safety class which is mandatory for this program. Make a blinking Robot Badge (This program is recommended for older children and teens).

July 16: Marble Machine Tinkering
Roll a marble down a contraption of your own design using everyday materials.

July 23: Animation Station

July 30: Build a better…
Using Strawbees and other everyday materials take on fun engineering challenges.
