How to Conduct an Ash Tree Inventory for Your Town using Collector ArcGIS
The emerald ash borer (EAB) has devastated ash trees across the US. In 2018 this invasive insect was confirmed in Vermont, where it is expected to kill 99% of ash trees, including those in public right-of-ways along town roads. Conducting an ash tree inventory is the first step for municipalities to determine how they will manage the trees in their public right-of-ways. This hands-on workshop with Joanne Garton, Technical Assistance Coordinator, VT Urban and Community Forestry Program, VT Department of Forest, Parks and Recreation, will train participants how to conduct a community ash tree inventory using the (free) Collector for ArcGIS Application on smartphones or iPads. The app will create a map of where ash trees are located in your town’s right-of-way for making management decisions.
This workshop is free and open to the public. The workshop is most appropriate for people who have some basic knowledge of EAB and who will be helping their towns to conduct an ash inventory in the near future. We strongly encourage people to come in teams of at least two people. Participants should be able to bring a smartphone or a cell-enabled iPad to the workshop.
